TRT Treatment Options — Injectable, Oral, and Gel

1 min read

PrescribedRX offers three FDA-approved forms of testosterone replacement. Your clinician will recommend the best option based on your lifestyle, preferences, and clinical profile.

Option 1: Injectable Testosterone (Testosterone Cypionate) #

This is the most commonly prescribed and most precise form of TRT.

  • Starting dose: 75–100 mg per week, divided into two doses
  • Administration: Subcutaneous injection using a 25–30 gauge, ½” needle
  • Injection sites: Abdomen (2+ inches from the navel), outer thigh, or upper buttock
  • Important: Rotate injection sites every time to prevent tissue damage and scarring

Injectable testosterone offers the most consistent hormone levels and is easiest to adjust based on lab results.

Option 2: Oral Testosterone (Testosterone Undecanoate) #

For patients who prefer a needle-free option.

  • Starting dose: 237 mg twice daily, taken with food
  • Dosing range: 158–396 mg twice daily
  • Critical note: This medication must be taken with a meal. Food is required for proper absorption — skipping a meal when taking this medication significantly reduces its effectiveness.

Option 3: Testosterone Gel (Topical) #

Applied daily to the skin. Best for patients who prefer a non-invasive, daily routine.

  • Application sites: Shoulders, upper arms, inner thighs, or abdomen
  • Allow the gel to dry completely before covering with clothing
  • Wait at least 2 hours before showering or swimming

⚠️ Transfer Warning: Testosterone gel can transfer to partners or children through skin contact. Always cover the application site and wash your hands thoroughly before physical contact. If a child or female partner is exposed, contact a healthcare provider.
